Description
With its dense, mounding form and outstanding deep purple foliage and flower color, Purple Pixie Loropetalum is just the plant we’ve been looking for…for decades. Growing to only about 2 feet in height with a spread of 3 to 4 feet, Purple Pixie boasts some of the most intense purple foliage color of any plant on the market, and the color doesn’t fade during summer or winter or in sun or in shade. Vibrant pink, witch hazel-like, fringe flowers are produced in spring, providing a stunning contrast to the the purple, evergreen foliage.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With its low and mounding form, Purple Pixie Loropetalum fits perfectly as an accent in smaller garden spaces or solo in pots, planters and other containers. In larger landscape spaces Purple Pixie is ideal for use as a border, in groupings, or mass plantings. Use it where a low plant is needed in home foundation plantings, as a border along walkways and paths, to cascade over walls, and as a groundcover on embankments, hillsides and slopes for beautification and erosion control. Purple Pixie is one of a very few Loropetalum cultivars that works very well in pots and planters, where it’s weeping branches will cascade beautifully over the edges of pots. A fine addition to purple theme gardens, Asian theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 2.5 to 3 feet apart for mass plantings; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Loropetalum variety is not winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
When planted right, and in the right spot, Purple Pixie Loropetalum is easy to grow and maintain. It must have well-drained soil. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant in a well-drained site. In our gardens, we’ve found that Purple Pixie® Loropetalum grows well in full sun or part shade. It has also shown exceptional tolerance to drought, heat, humidity, insects and disease. Purple Pixie Loropetalum requires no pruning to keep its dense, mounding form. That said, a stray branch can be snipped any time of year to keep the plant tidy.

Arrived in excellent condition, which I’ve come to expect from Wilson Bros! I live right at the limit of cold temperatures this plant can survive and I will say this winter was too much for these guys. Serious winter burn and so far it doesn’t seem they will rebound. A risk I was willing to accept but a cautionary tale for anyone else living in zone 7a.

These 20 purple pixies were delivered quickly and all were still moist even though UPS decided to hold them over the weekend! Unfortunately during shipping UPS “smooshed” the side of one box which broke the main stem on two of them. I took pictures of the damage and emailed customer service. Within five minutes they replied, apologized and are sending two replacements. That’s some great customer service!—————————————————–Hi Deborah, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Purple Pixie Loropetalum. Arrived in good shape. Much smaller than I thought, but it will be interesting to see if it rivals the other one I planted this spring. ——— WBG Reply: Hi Charlotte – Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review. Depending on the time of year plants can be a little smaller or larger than average. Because they’re true dwarfs, the Purple Pixie Loropetalum tend to always be and look much smaller in containers than other larger Loropetalum cultivars. I have these planted in several spots in my landscape. Love them! Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with. We’re at your service! – Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
I love these plants. The purple pixie loropetalums arrived very healthy and nice looking. I have already ordered more plants from Wilson Brothers. I will continue to be a repeat customer! The quality of their plants are 2nd to none. ———- WBG RESPONSE: Hi Amy – Thanks so much for taking the time to provide a review of your purchase. We love the Purple Pixie as well and have the first three plants that ever came off the “production line” growing in our gardens. They’re still doing great to this day with very little care. Just make sure the soil drains well as they don’t like constantly soggy or wet soil. We’ll certainly appreciate any future business and always feel free to let us know if there’s every anything else we can help you with. Plant long and prosper! – Brent Wilson | Wilson Bros Gardens
Large healthy plants grew well all summer. Unfortunately, we had an extremely cold – colder than our normal winters where I lost plants I have had growing for 12+ years – and they froze out. I have already made another purchase from Wilson Bos. Gardens (these made it through winter) and will be placing orders in the future.
