Description
An easy-to-grow selection of our North American native Virginia Sweetspire, ‘Love Child’ is more compact than the species so is a great fit for smaller garden spaces and even containers. In spring, this one features abundant bottlebrush-like spires of sweetly fragrant white flowers radiating outwards from the 3 to 4 feet tall and wide mound of dense bright green leaves. Butterflies and a variety of other beneficial pollinators are attracted to the sweet scent and will also enjoy browsing the flowers. But the color show doesn’t end with the spring bloom. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in the fall the foliage turns striking shades or burgundy-red. A versatile and extremely low-maintenance shrub for sun or shade and moist soil, and you might be happy to know the deer turn their nose up to it.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense rounded mound 3 to 4 feet tall and equally as wide, Love Child Sweetspire is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a natural hedge in sunny or shady landscape, flowering shrub and woodland borders where the soil tends to stay consistently moist to wet. Excellent near patios, porches, decks and other outdoor living spaces where the fragrant flowers, butterflies feeding and attractive foliage can be enjoyed from close up. he small size makes it perfect for smaller gardens and foundation plantings. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, fragrance gardens, native plant gardens, cut flower gardens, white or red theme gardens, or sunny or shady woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 3 to 3.5 feet apart for solid hedges;Â 7 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
