Description
This is the white flowering version of the Lady Banks Rose. It was the first of the species to be described back in 1807. It is a large growing rambling rose with many uses in design. Left to grow naturally it will form a very large mounding and rambling shrub up to 10 feet tall with a spread of 20 feet or more, which is great for sunny landscape or woodland borders or to completely cover an ugly fence. With support, it is a vigorous climber to 30 feet high that can be trained to climb poles or columns or to grow on the top of a fence, arbor or pergola. If you have an unsightly old shed or other building you’d rather not see, this rose will cover it completely. In spring comes the breathtaking display of miniature double flowers strongly scented like violets dripping from the green, thornless stems. When quickly established, the White Lady Banks Rose is one of the more drought-tolerant, disease and heat resistant rose species, making it a favorite of ours and many other gardeners.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Lady Banks Rose can be grown as a larger mounding shrub or a climber. It is vigorous and grows quite large so don’t consider growing it in a container. Simply put, this rose is gorgeous, but needs its space.
As a Shrub
Growing in a huge mound 10 to 12 feet tall and up to 20 feet or more wide, Lady Banks Rose is ideal for use as a specimen or a natural hedge or privacy screen in landscape borders that provide it room to grow. We like to plant it along a fence line, sunny or partially shaded woodland border or on large slopes, and just let it grow naturally.Â
As a Climber
As a climber the Lady Banks Rose can achieve heights of 30 feet or more, with support. It is ideal for use to grow along the top a sturdy fence or to cover large arbors and other structures. If you don’t mind training or pruning it, Lady Banks a great rose for growing up large columns or porch posts in home foundation plantings. Just know that you’ll be doing a considerable amount of pruning. Also keep in mind that it blooms on old wood (last years growth), so be careful not to over-prune the older branches.
Growing Preferences
The Lady Banks Rose is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average or above average fertility and full sun to part shade. As with all other roses, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves but some afternoon shade or filtered sun is okay. Flowering will be best if the plant receives at least 6 hours of direct sun during the day. Has very good drought tolerance and disease resistance. We think this rose is more beautiful when allowed space to grow naturally, with little if any pruning. That said, she responds well to pruning. With regular pruning a Lady Banks Rose can be kept full and bushy.Â
Caution:Â Â This rose blooms on old wood so be careful not to over-prune the older branches until after the spring bloom.Â

I recently purchased two plants – first one was for a gift for my sister in north palm beach (keeping fingers crossed for it’s survival in heat) it is such a lovely heathy plant I immediately ordered myself one for my home in Tennessee. The plants are healthy and arrived in great condition. Thank you for having such a well cared for variety.——————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you and your sister enjoy them for years to come! The lady banks rose was even better than expected. Packaging was pretty battered, and the stake had been broken; however the rose was undamaged and packing around pot and soil was just fine. You have a very good way of packing. It was about a week, before i could plant it. I’m happy to report it is doing very well, thank you! I will highly recommend wilsonbrosgardens.com. ——– WBG REPLY: Hi Joan – We’re glad to hear that even though the box suffered damage during transit that your Lady Banks Rose arrived with no damage, and that it’s doing very well after planting. Even though FedEx usually does a great job handling 999 out of 1,000 boxes they deliver for us, we still take measures regarding packaging to make sure that if the box is mishandled by a FedEx employee, who might be having a bad day, that the plants inside the box will suffer little if any damage. Had the plant been damaged we would’ve shipped another one out to you immediately as FedEx insures every package they deliver for us. Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you! – Brent Wilson | Wilson Bros Gardens
