Description
Discovered by Roly Barry, Barry’s Silver Lawson Cypress, also known as Port Orford Cedar, is a much hardier improvement over some other white-leaved Chamaecyparis lawsoniana varieties. In spring, new growth is a gorgeous near-white over light blue-green mature foliage. The foliage tips don’t seem to burn, its more heat and cold tolerant, has no problems with summer drought when established or Arctic winters when temperatures might drop to -15F, and is much more resistant to root rot. It also does better in most parts of the country, though will appreciate some protection from direct afternoon sun in hot-summer climates. We’re not surely what the mature size will be but have heard from others that it will reach 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide in 7 years or so. This smaller stature makes Barry’s Silver a fine selection for smaller garden spaces, and it really shines in containers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Barry’s Silver Lawson Cypress is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings where space allows, Two can be used to frame an entryway. Its smaller size make Barry’s Silver a fine candidate for containers. A fine addition to rock gardens, native plant gardens, Asian themed gardens, conifer gardens and the Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
Barry’s Silver Lawson Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Some protection from the hot afternoon sun in hot-summer climates is advised. Whether growing in the ground or in pots, constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic, so plant in a well-drained site or pot and avoid overwatering. Provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Established plants are quite drought tolerant and will only require an occasional drink during prolonged periods of drought. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning required except to snip a rare stray stem that is spoiling the shape of the plant.
